What to Expect During the Design Process

Collaboration begins with a conversation.

“Every client I work with has ideas of what they love, and they want to see those ideas translated through the lens of the designer,” says Mahoney Landscape Designer Drew Riley. “I always consider the architecture and what’s appropriate for the style of the home, the clients’ desires, and the location—village or woods or water, to determine what plants will work aesthetically and survive in the site’s microclimates.”

A field-verified base plan ensures accuracy.

The property’s existing survey includes elevations, which are then field measured to confirm that they’re correct. A computer-generated base plan is the foundation for future design phases.

The conceptual design phase explores solutions.

During conceptual design, spatial relationships, site circulation, and preliminary plant palettes take shape. The graphics during this phase are typically hand drawn on the CAD base map.

Design and construction document preparation.

After your approval of the conceptual plan, we move directly into the technical design phase. The conceptual drawings are computerized so an exact plant count and hardscape material quantities can be determined for budgeting, procurement, and to guide the installation team.

This set of drawings includes the plant palette with a photograph of every recommended plant.

What to Expect During the Design Process FAQs for Hamptons Properties

When is the ideal time to begin the landscape design process?

If you envision enjoying your outdoor spaces by Memorial Day or hosting during summer holidays, the design process should begin now. Thoughtful planning and plant procurement require time, and starting early ensures early access to the most desirable plant material and the best possible outcome.

How does the design process begin?

The process begins with a tailored conversation. Your ideas and preferences are carefully interpreted through a designer’s trained eye, with close attention to your home’s architecture, the character of the surrounding environment, and the nuances of the site—from village settings to wooded or waterfront properties.

How is accuracy ensured in the design?

The process begins with a detailed, field-verified base plan. Existing surveys, including elevations, are carefully measured and confirmed on-site. This information is used to create a precise computer-generated plan that serves as the foundation for all subsequent design phases.

What happens during the conceptual design phase?

This is where the vision is artfully explored. Spatial relationships, circulation, and preliminary plant palettes are thoughtfully composed, often expressed through hand-rendered drawings layered over the base plan to convey the design intent.

What occurs after the conceptual design is approved?

Once approved, the project advances into technical design. The conceptual plans are translated into detailed, computerized drawings that define exact plant quantities and hardscape materials. These documents are essential for budgeting, procurement, and guiding the installation process.

Will I be able to see the specific plants included in my design?

Absolutely. The final design documentation includes a complete plant palette, along with photographs of each recommended plant, allowing you to fully visualize the finished landscape.

How is the transition from design to installation handled?

The process is seamless. With an in-house designer, there is continuous collaboration between design and construction teams, supported by ongoing field oversight and regular check-ins to ensure the design is executed as intended.

What assurances are provided after installation?

All newly installed trees and shrubs are covered by a lifetime warranty. When installation is paired with ongoing maintenance, your investment is fully protected—you won’t pay twice for covered plant material.
